Spotlight - California Community Colleges
The California Corequisite Initiative (CCI) is a systemwide effort to develop and widely share a set of tools to improve instruction, delivery and equitable student outcomes in math courses. The initiative is a collaboration among several organizations under the direction of the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office.
The California legislature recently passed several laws that significantly decrease the use of developmental math courses as a requirement for community college students to access math courses necessary for their major or degree goals. This both increased access and overall completion of college-level math courses, but also increased the diversity of background math knowledge and experience of students taking more challenging courses.
Corequisite courses are a cornerstone strategy in supporting students in transfer-level math courses. They can be highly effective in providing targeted interventions to students to improve foundational math knowledge and help them accelerate in the primary transfer-level math course content.
Through the CCI, the NLET and Pragya Systems co-developed with faculty targeted Just In Time Math modules and support systems to assist faculty in effective corequisite delivery and student math success.
